About a year and a half ago, we set off on a journey to write a book that would encourage retirees, and those on their way to retirement, to intentionally engage in God’s purpose for their lives. Because the truth is that retirement is not the end of your Kingdom calling – it’s just the beginning. Retirement opens new opportunities to invest in the people around you and mentor the next generation through the accumulated wisdom and experience you’ve gained throughout your life. There are over 150 million people in the workforce today, 36% of them identifying themselves as born again believers which means there are 55 million believers at work. If research is accurate 3.3 million believers now connect their faith and their work. That leaves almost 52 Million believers who have yet to be activated in all areas of their faith life. 52 million Jesus followers who think like I did that in order to be in ministry they need to quit their job and work for a church or a Christian nonprofit ministry. You wouldn’t buy a used lawn mower without making sure it works, you wouldn’t buy a home without a home inspection and you wouldn’t buy a used car without checking under the hood so why is it we invest in our 401k or 403b or an IRA without checking to see what it is invested in?  I have no idea but I do know that this can be a dangerous and slippery slope – it’s like eating sausage without knowing what was put in it, as long as it’s all ground up, it looks good but who knows what’s really in it. Could it kill you? Probably not if its cooked but it could make you sick. The same with your 401k or 403 b – what its invested in probably won’t kill you but it could make you sick.
