iRetire4Him Show #98 - #2 of 3-Part Series: Conversations We Have to Have: Leisure has value, but it doesn’t have purpose

#2 of 3-Part Series: In general, Americans have bought into the lie that retirement should be 30+ years of pure leisure. But that’s not a sustainable way of life! Retirement Reformation founder Bruce Bruinsma reflects on the example that God gives of 6 days of purpose and 1 day of rest. As retirees, we can still find the necessary rest and fun in retirement without trying to make rest and fun the driving factor during our retirement years.

Doug Hunter with Pinnacle Forum is 75 years old but nowhere near slowing down! He spends most of his time engaging with Christian leaders at Pinnacle Forum, to make a difference in the marketplace, but he also serves on several boards, sharing his wisdom and experience. He’s a shining example of living with purpose over leisure and encourages iRetire4Him Podcast listeners to ask God how He wants to use them.

Bruce also shares a bit more about their Oxygen for Life events that are taking place across the nation and Retirement Reformation’s goals for reaching as many retirees as possible with the message that you have purpose and God wants to use you as long as you have breath in your lungs!

iRetire4Him Show #96 - #5 of 5-Part Series: The Dangers of Growing Gray: Isolation and Suicide

#5 of 5-Part Series: In this series you’ve seen just how detrimental isolation is – often leading to loneliness, addiction, divorce, and even bankruptcy. Well, suicide often branches from one or more of these five areas. Even scarier – studies show there’s been a 20% increase of suicide attempts in adults 85+ in the last few years and over one third of suicide deaths were 55 or older.

What’s the main warning sign? Isolation and loneliness. Now you can clearly see why the iRetire4Him Podcast is addressing the dangers of isolation.

The message of Retirement Reformation combats ideas of hopelessness: you’re unique and called by God specifically. That gives you purpose, so you can step into God’s preferred future for you.

Even though he “retired” from Christian radio at 54, God allowed mid-segment guest Gordon Marcy to start the Glorystone App, an online player used by Christian broadcasters and ministries. Gordon confesses himself that he doesn’t have a background in software, but he shows how even at retirement age God can use you to do something you’ve never dreamed of. Listen to his advice for you!

iRetire4Him Show #95 - #4 of 5-Part Series: The Dangers of Growing Gray: Isolation and Bankruptcy

#4 of 5-Part Series: Rising costs, credit cards, lack of budgeting, no conversations around money, stewardship issues – all reasons that can lead to filing for bankruptcy in retirement. Our finances need sanctification, too!

Bruce from the Retirement Reformation gives examples about the importance of having “wise advisors” to make financial decisions. And if we’re living in isolation, that’s hard! Seeking out this advice is part of the good stewardship that God has called each believer to. Managing money isn’t always easy, but God is ready to lead you in your financial decisions, if you’ll let Him.

In the second segment, we welcomed Dr. Mark Andrews to share about his organization Adoptive Family Resources, which he acknowledges has brought a great fulfillment to his life after having retired from family counseling.

How could retirees make a difference in foster and adoption ministry? Mark discusses a need for court appointed social workers (CASAS) and volunteers at foster and adoption organizations. Could you be a “wrap-around grandparent?”

iRetire4Him Show #94 - #3 of 5-Part Series: The Dangers of Growing Gray, Isolation and Divorce

#3 of 5-Part Series: In this episode, Pastor Gary Gilmore comes back for another segment to finish his talk on how God has been using him to help retired military members. We hear more about issues of isolation he’s seen as well as what can help.

So, how does isolation play into retirees getting divorced in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s? This is a question that Bruce Bruinsma of Retirement Reformation aims to answer in Part 3 of this series. He also helps to address other issues that result from divorce – at any age but especially for the older generation.

Just like Jim asks in this show: Where’s the HOPE in this conversation? Listen to find out! Also, be sure to listen and then reach out to us if you or someone you know helps with marriage counseling and retreats for seniors.

iRetire4Him Show #93 - #2 of 5-Part Series: The Dangers of Growing Gray, Isolation and Addiction

#2 of 5-Part Series: This current iRetire4Him Podcast series is all about the resulting “grays” that stem from isolation during retirement. Have you listened to the intro episode, Isolation Leads to Loneliness? If not, we recommend that you go back and listen to that Part 1 show, too.

Alcohol, drugs, and porn aren’t just for the young, and we’re now seeing more and more addiction to these things among seniors. So how does this lead to isolation? Because addictions create shame that causes one to isolate him or herself. But just like we highlighted last week, there’s HOPE for retirees that find themselves in addiction and isolation. Retirement Reformation isn’t a recovery program, but it does want to help retirees have purpose and hope for the future!

Pastor and former military chaplain Gary Gilmore shares about his work ministering in the military. He starts talking about his unique position of chaplain ministry and will follow up next episode discussing his current work with retired military members. iRetire4Him Show #92 - #1 of 5-Part Series: The Dangers of Growing Gray, Isolation Leads to Loneliness

#1 of 5-Part Series: Oftentimes, the older we get, the more our world shrinks. What does this mean? Well, as more time passes, we lose more friends and loved ones. This can result in increased isolation. And that’s the focus of our whole “Dangers of Growing Gray” 5-part series. Isolation frequently leads to other issues, which is why we need to tackle it head on!

Today’s show revolves around isolation during our retirement years making us lonelier than ever before. And this isn’t just an opinion. Bruce Bruinsma from the Retirement Reformation and Jim discuss findings from the US Surgeon General about how loneliness is impacting our senior community. For example, did you know that it’s estimated that isolation and loneliness can be as detrimental to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day?

Although isolation and loneliness plague each of us at times, there’s HOPE that the iRetire4Him Podcast wants to shine light on. Listen to the episode for more details, but here is some advice from Bruce on how to handle your loneliness:

-        Read Psalm 118.

-        Read the book of John.

-        Look around to see who you can help.

-        Learn about and reflect the fruit of the Spirit.

-        Use the Retirement Reformation Prayer Guide.

-        Start a Recreating Retirement small group workshop.

-        Join the Retirement Reformation Facebook group.

This is sure to be a wonderful series, so don’t forget to keep tuning in!

iRetire4Him Show #91 - #3 of 3-Part Series: Future Retirement Reality: Change

#3 of 3-Part Series: Change is a part of life, but it can hit hard and often during retirement. It just adds to the complexity and chaos that are realities of retirement. But as Bruce states: “knowing what is true and knowing what is coming allows us to make better decisions.”

How do you handle change? Do you see it as a danger or as an opportunity? Change is inevitable, however, planning your retirement wisely is a tremendous help. That’s where Retirement Reformation steps in! Take advantage of all their online resources (website link below).

The interview with Pat Riley, this show’s mid-segment guest, is extra special as he’s the father of iRetire4Him Podcast’s producer, Todd Riley. His testimony shows that retirement isn’t the end, especially when you’re open to God’s leading in your life.

iRetire4Him Show #90 - #2 of 3-Part Series: Future Retirement Reality: Chaos

#2 of 3-Part Series: What are key truths to know about your future retirement? 1) Recognize there will be disruptions. 2) We have to make decisions. These are two important takeaways in this current series. Retirement Reformation encourages and equips retirees with planning for your retirement years, but that doesn’t mean that it always turns out the way we’ve planned. And this is reality!

Find out some of the ways that Bruce and his wife Judy have planned (and planned and planned again) to ward off chaos in their lives and even for their children. You might just get some good ideas for your own retirement planning.

And don’t miss the second part of our interview with Rob and Connie Albright – retirement-aged believers who are letting God lead them instead of following what the world says about how we should live out our retirement years. We’ll leave you with this fantastic quote:

“Don’t retire, re-fire. Find out what your passion is and chase at it with all you’ve got left.” - Rob Albright
