iRetire4Him – Mentoring in Action – House Projects - Week Three

- Changing light bulbs

- changing furnace filters

- painting a room

- changing a tire

- fixing a leaky faucet

...and the list goes on.

This is a list of items that most people in the next generations have zero idea on how to do. Sure, they can You Tube it but how much better would it be to work alongside them and teach them how to do it and show them what a joy it is to fix things with their own two hands.

Over the years, I have been mentored in this way many times.

I have a Brother-in-Law that isn’t afraid to try to fix anything.  Therefore, with him around I am not afraid to fix anything either.  When I was a kid, my dad taught me how to paint, first a room, then a set of rooms, then we painted the house – then I painted the house.  Every time you learn how to fix something on your own, you are saving money and building confidence.  When you help someone with a project around the house it is natural to engage in thoughtful conversations.  Your relationship with them grows deeper because you are investing in them.

So ask yourself:

What is it that I know how to do that I could help someone younger learn? Wax a Car? Fix an electrical outlet? Dust and vacuum?

No matter what project or chore it is, helping someone better themselves is an investment of your time and makes an impact.

Your intentionality to help the younger generation around the house will mean the world to them.   Do it together and watch your impact grow.   And one more side note, always try to get a free meal or dessert out of it. It makes them feel like they paid you back and you get to test a new recipe. (final side note – if the recipe was a disaster – teach them to cook next time around)

Philippians 2:3New Living Translation (NLT)

3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.
